Eremita de la Umbría italiana que siendo muy joven, abandonó su oficio de pastor para retirarse como eremita en el Montalbano en Bonsciano di Città di Castello. Vivió una intensa vida penitencial y ascética para alcanzar una íntima unión con Dios.
Según narra la imagineria popular tuvo grandes dones en los que destacaron el de consejo y los taumatúrgicos. Su fama de santidad atrajo a muchas personas que se acercaban hasta su eremo y después de hablar con él regresaban libres de preocupaciones. Después de su muerte, acaecida un 8 de julio, su cuerpo fue sepultado con grandes honores en la iglesia del castillo de Monte Albano, y fue lugar de peregrinación y sobre su tumba se realizaron muchos milagros. En 1230, los habitantes de Città di Castello, destruyeron el castillo de Montalbano y como botín de guerra se llevaron el cuerpo de san Iluminado, que lo depusieron en la catedral. Los milagros del santo hizo que san Iluminado fuera proclamado tercer patrono de Città di Castello, así como defensor de la Academia de los Señores Illuminati y abogado de la Universidad dei Sartori.
Hoy san Iluminado ya no tiene fiesta litúrgica en la diócesis de Città di Castello y tampoco se saben dónde han ido a parar sus reliquias. Pero su fiesta todavía se celebra, el segundo domingo de julio en la capilla que fue construída sobre el eremitorio donde vivió en Montalbano donde hay una fuente de la que se dice que cura las enfermedades de los ojos. No confundir este santo con el beato Iluminado de Rieti, franciscano y uno de los primeros discípulos de san Francisco.
